Hello Class,
Although society has not accepted homosexuality in the past, acceptance has increased dramatically. We are now in a position where we can openly and objectively discuss this matter because of greater awareness, political activism, and advances in research. While maintaining an informed posture is crucial when dealing with minority sexual preferences, criminal justice professionals must also take a compassionate stance.
As a result of reading Cantor’s article, I gained a more comprehensive understanding of homosexuality and paraphilia. In the same way that homosexuality and paraphilia are born in childhood and continue throughout life, they are both characterized by the fact that they lead to lifelong behavior. Sexual behavior between same-sex partners does not always indicate their preference for opposite-sex partners and being extroverted (Cantor, 2012). I have not been familiar with this subject until now. Nevertheless, this article has given me valuable insights into the stigma attached to asking someone about their sexual orientation. Having this article available helps a lot for understanding without insulting someone.
Because there was no discussion of homosexuality in public, and its practice was hidden from mainstream society is no longer the case, more discussion and awareness are needed to be in the spotlight. Previously, homosexuality was viewed as a personal choice to persuade others to adopt a particular sexual preference.
