An advisory council is composed of a group of stakeholders selected to collaborate and advise on the implementation of the school counseling program. The advisory council promotes contributions of various stakeholders through discussion and evaluation of school counseling program goals, objectives, and outcomes. The advisory council may assist school counselors on creating annual student outcomes goals and reviewing results, making recommendations about the school counseling program, and advocating for community engagement, funding, and resources to benefit the school counseling program. An advisory council meets at least twice per academic year, establishes a meeting agenda, and maintains meetings for each advisory council meeting.
formulate an action plan outline to establish an advisory council for use in future practice in your role as a school counselor. Refer to The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling handbook on pages 72-76. Your outline should address the following components in a bulleted list:
- Purpose of the advisory council
- Representation of stakeholders
- Size of the council
- Appropriate candidates for council participation
- Chairperson
- Membership terms (appointment timeframes for council members)
