About This Project

In this project, you will develop a career portfolio. Your portfolio will consist of the following items, which you will complete as you progress through the project:

Mock Interview Part 1: Written Responses

From the perspective of one of the job positions in Step 1 or one you selected from your own search, submit written responses to the following questions. If you choose your own job posting, please remember to include that posting in your submission as an appendix.

  1. A transformational leader must think strategically and consider the external environment and its varying factors is order to make decisions and solve problems. Describe one or two strategies you might employ in order identify stakeholder groups and their needs.
  2. The success of the organization is dependent upon leadership’s ability to calculate how the plans and actions of the organization will affect stakeholders. Describe one or two strategies for achieving this in the short and long term.
  3. What do you take into consideration when identifying the best method to solve a problem?
  4. What has been a difficult decision for you to make in your career and why?
  5. What practical experience do you have leading or managing a project or presentation?
  6. How will you continue to develop yourself in this role?

Mock Interview Part 2: Oral Responses

The second part of the mock interview requires you to provide oral responses to a set of interview questions. You will submit your responses in an audio file. From the perspective of the job position you chose earlier, respond to the following scenario:

While managing a project, you notice some important deadlines have not been met. As a result of the missed deadline, your organization is at risk of losing funding for the project. As a leader in this organization, describe the actions you would you take to address this problem. Be sure to address the following questions in your response.

  1. What decisions can be made quickly and which ones take more time?
  2. What is the process you use to make decisions in uncertain circumstances and why?
  3. How would you strike a balance between information gathering and analysis, and moving forward with urgency?
  4. What is your process for analyzing the problem or conflict in preparation for action?
  5. How do you prioritize tasks when addressing diverse problems?
  6. What methods would you use to ensure that priorities and objectives are clear and are being addressed?

Ninety-Day Action Plan

Using your notes on your skills map team building activities from previous steps, prepare a detailed 90-day action plan for how you will continue to make an impact as a transformational leader in that role.

Your action plan should be consistent with ethical business decision making and incorporate SMART goals, should include applicable concepts and information from Projects 1 and 2, and relevant academic and practitioner-researched material. Your plan should do the following:

1. Specifically identify and explain how you will continue exhibiting each of the 5 I’s of Transformational Leadership (Idealized Attributes, Idealized Behaviors, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration) within the context of the job. Be sure to address how you will ethically and legally:

  • Inspire others and instill trust (Idealized Influence, which includes Idealized Attributes and Idealized Behaviors)
  • Motivate your subordinates, peers, and stakeholders (Inspirational Motivation)
  • Challenge your subordinates and peers to be innovative and creative (Intellectual Stimulation)
  • Attend to your subordinates’ need for achievement and growth (Individualized Consideration)

2. Evaluate/critique how your personal leadership strengths, competencies, and Individual Development Plan (identified in Project 2) will play a role in your success in the position you have chosen. In your evaluation, include an honest assessment of how hard and soft skills will factor into your ability to establish and maintain interorganizational relationships and strengthen the organization’s competencies.
