Description
For 10 points extra credit, please watch the following video on police militarization of marginalized communities.
In two full pages, please answer the following for full credit:
1) Summarize the video. What were Oliver’s arguments and evidence? Were they convincing? Half a page
2) How does this add to Dr. Anderson’s lecture? Half a page
3) Why were people made about the video of Michael Brown stealing a cigar from a convenient store before? When this video released, what is being implied? Half a page
4) People say that more Black and Brown officers are needed on the police force. Do you think that will help? Why or why not? Half a page
white race reflection
In a two page (size 12 double spaced) reflection, answer the following questions:
- In her lecture “White Rage”, Carol Anderson argues that White Rage is legislation passed to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters. She calls this the “kindling” of fire embers before these communities rise up as they did in Ferguson, MO in 2014. How does she say that White Rage led to the death of Michael Brown? Think about his schooling, and how the community treated it’s Black citizens in policing, representation, etc.
- Think back to the “fixed fallacy of racism.” How does what Dr. Anderson argue happened in Florida and Texas in regards to voting connect to Black codes such as the Grandfather clause, or literacy tests we discussed earlier this semester, which also kept Black American men from voting.
- Do you agree with the assessment that disenfranchisement in voting today is directly connected to disenfranchisement during Jim Crow? If yes, why, if not, why not?
- (A real reflection) What did you make of the events that occurred after the murder of George Floyd in May 2020? What about in our own community in La Mesa, California? How did you hear others speak about these events?
