Question Description
needs to be at least 300 words but can be longer, just as long as the questions are answered. it is just for a discussion post. you probably don’t have to read the short stories, everything is online but just change it up.
After reading Carver’s “Cathedral” and Morrison’s “Recitatif,” and the section on character please respond to these discussion board questions:
- In “Cathedral,” describe Robert and the narrator and how they function as foils for one another. Perhaps start by defining the term “foil,” and then applying it to the two characters.
- Is the narrator a static or dynamic character? Use the text itself to explain your answer?
- What is the significance of the narrator and Robert drawing a cathedral at the end of the story? How would the story be different if they drew a different object? In other words, how does the idea of a cathedral link to the story’s theme of seeing beyond the surface of reality?
- Looking at “Cathedral” and “Recitatif,” analyze how each narrator’s perspective is shaped by those around them, specifically Robert and Twlya, respectively. What do the stories imply in regards to the nature of truth, perspective, and/or the existence of pure individualism?
