Question Description
AirCon, Inc. management may submit a quote for a job which involves the complete renovation of an airport terminal at City International Airport. The requirements for the contract indicate that work is to be limited to evenings and nights and no weekends to reduce interference with current terminal operations. Work would be planned from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Mondays – Thursdays. Thus, workers will be working 4 – 12 hour shifts during evenings and nights. Mr. George Jetson, President of AirCon, Inc., sent you the following email message:
Good morning,
As you know, we may submit a quote for the renovation job at City International Airport. The work will have to be completed during evenings and nights from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. We will require the workers to work 4-12 hour shifts, Monday – Thursday. In our meeting this morning, we feel that our current workforce will be able to complete this work, without any complications, even though the job will require them to work during the evenings and nights. We are sure the workers will appreciate the overtime and more time at home on the weekends. Our expected time frame for completing this job is 10 months. We expect our crew from Atlanta to complete this work as they are only 2 ½ hours away from a nearby city. The crews should plan to leave by 3:30 p.m. each Monday in order to arrive at City International Airport by start time of 6:30 p.m. On Friday mornings, the crews will be expected to return home to Atlanta. We will provide hotel rooms for the workers at City Hotel, near the airport. We will have rooms blocked for the workers to use to rest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays since the workers will be traveling home Friday morning.
We have a dedicated workforce and I know that they will be anxious to start this job and will be looking forward to the overtime pay. As the safety professional, we did want to ask your opinion about this job before we quote it. Do you have any concerns? If so, what are they and how do you suggest we address those concerns. Also, Judy Jetson, VP of Human Resources said she was somewhat concerned about the long shifts. I know our workers and they don’t get tired! Should we be concerned about these long shifts? Judy also wanted to know if there were issues with OSHA and these long shifts. If not, we should be good, right?
